On May 7, 1994, Norway’s most famous painting, “The Scream” by Edvard Munch, was recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. The fragile painting was recovered undamaged at a hotel in Asgardstrand, about 40 miles south of Oslo, police said.

The iconic 1893 painting of a waiflike figure on a bridge was stolen in only 50 seconds during a break-in on February 12, the opening day of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. Two thieves broke through a window of the National Gallery, cut a wire holding the painting to the wall and left a note reading “Thousand thanks for the bad security!”

A few days after the theft, a Norwegian anti-abortion group said it could have the painting returned if Norwegian television showed an anti-abortion film. The claim turned out to be false. The government also received a $1 million ransom demand on March 3, but refused to pay it due to a lack of proof that the demand was genuine.

Eventually, police found four pieces of the painting’s frame in Nittedal, a suburb north of Oslo, and what may have been a cryptic messages that the thieves wanted to discuss a ransom. Finally, in January 1996, four men were convicted and sentenced in connection with the theft. They included Paal Enger, who had been convicted in 1988 of stealing Munch’s “The Vampire” in Oslo. Enger was sentenced this time to six-and-a-half-years in prison. He escaped while on a field trip in 1999, and was captured 12 days later in a blond wig and dark sunglasses trying to buy a train ticket to Copenhagen.

In August 2004, another version of The Scream was stolen along with Munch’s The Madonna, this time from the Munch Museum in Oslo. Three men were convicted in connection with that theft in May 2006. Police recovered both works in August with minor marks and tears.

Munch developed an emotionally charged style that served as an important forerunner of the 20th century Expressionist movement. He painted “The Scream” as part of his “Frieze of Life” series, in which sickness, death, fear, love and melancholy are central themes. He died in January 1944 at the age of 81

In a ceremony presided over by England’s Queen Elizabeth II and French President Francois Mitterand, a rail tunnel under the English Channel was officially opened, connecting Britain and the European mainland for the first time since the Ice Age.

The channel tunnel, or “Chunnel,” connects Folkstone, England, with Sangatte, France, 31 miles away. The Chunnel cut travel time between England and France to a swift 35 minutes and eventually between London and Paris to two-and-a-half hours.

As the world’s longest undersea tunnel, the Chunnel runs under water for 23 miles, with an average depth of 150 feet below the seabed. Each day, about 30,000 people, 6,000 cars and 3,500 trucks journey through the Chunnel on passenger, shuttle and freight trains.

Millions of tons of earth were moved to build the two rail tunnels–one for northbound and one for southbound traffic–and one service tunnel. Fifteen thousand people were employed at the peak of construction. Ten people were killed during construction.

Napoleon’s engineer, Albert Mathieu, planned the first tunnel under the English Channel in 1802, envisioning an underground passage with ventilation chimneys that would stretch above the waves. In 1880, the first real attempt was made by Colonel Beaumont, who bore a tunnel more than a mile long before abandoning the project. Other efforts followed in the 20th century, but none on the scale of the tunnels begun in June 1988.

The Chunnel’s $16 billion cost was roughly twice the original estimate, and completion was a year behind schedule. One year into service, Eurotunnel announced a huge loss, one of the biggest in United Kingdom corporate history at the time. A scheme in which banks agreed to swap billions of pounds worth of loans for shares saved the tunnel from going under and it showed its first net profit in 1999.

Freight traffic was suspended for six months after a fire broke out on a lorry in the tunnel in November 1996. Nobody was seriously hurt in the incident.

In 1996, the American Society of Civil Engineers identified the tunnel as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

From Cape Canaveral, Florida, Navy Commander Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. is launched into space aboard the Freedom 7 space capsule, becoming the first American astronaut to travel into space. The suborbital flight, which lasted 15 minutes and reached a height of 116 miles into the atmosphere, was a major triumph for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

NASA was established in 1958 to keep U.S. space efforts abreast of recent Soviet achievements, such as the launching of the world’s first artificial satellite–Sputnik 1–in 1957. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the two superpowers raced to become the first country to put a man in space and return him to Earth. On April 12, 1961, the Soviet space program won the race when cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was launched into space, put in orbit around the planet, and safely returned to Earth. One month later, Shepard’s suborbital flight restored faith in the U.S. space program.

NASA continued to trail the Soviets closely until the late 1960s and the successes of the Apollo lunar program. In July 1969, the Americans took a giant leap forward with Apollo 11, a three-stage spacecraft that took U.S. astronauts to the surface of the moon and returned them to Earth. On February 5, 1971, Alan Shepard, the first American in space, became the fifth astronaut to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo 14 lunar landing mission.

Cerita ini ditulis oleh seorang wartawan di Taiwan sehubungan dengan adanya gosip mengenai makanan penambah kekuatan dan stamina yang dibuat dari sari/kaldu janin manusia.

‘Healthy Soup’ yang dipercaya dapat mendapat stamina dan keperkasaan pria terbuat dari janin bayi manusia berumur 6 - 8

Salah seorang pengusaha pemilik pabrik di daerah Tong Wan, Taiwan mengaku sebagai pengkonsumsi tetap ‘Healthy Soup’.
Sebagai hasilnya, pria berusia 62 tahun menjelaskan khasiat ‘Healthy Soup’ ini mempertahankan kemampuannya untuk dapat berhubungan seks beberapa kali dalam semalam.

Penulis diajak oleh pengusaha tersebut di atas ke salah satu restoran yang menyediakan ‘Healthy Soup’ di kota Fu San -
Canton dan diperkenalkan kepada juru masak restoran tersebut. Kata sandi untuk
‘Healthy Soup’ adalah BAIKUT.

Juru masak restoran menyatakan jenis makanan tersebut tidak mudah didapat karena mereka tidak tersedia ‘ready stock’.

Ditambahkan pula bahwa makanan tersebut harus disajikan secara fresh, bukan frozen.
Tetapi kalau berminat, mereka menyediakan ari-ari bayi (plasenta) yang dipercaya dapat meningkatkan gairah seksual dan juga obat awet muda.

Juru masak restoran tersebut mengatakan jika memang menginginkan Healthy Soup’, dia menganjurkan untuk datang ke
sebuah desa di luar kota dimana ada sepasang suami istri yang istrinya sedang mengandung 8 bulan.

Diceritakan pula bahwa si istri sebelumnya sudah pernah mengandung 2 kali, tetapi kedua anaknya lahir dengan jenis
kelamin perempuan.

Jika kali ini lahir perempuan lagi, maka! ‘Healthy Soup’ dapat didapat dengan waktu dekat.

Cara pembuatan ‘Healthy Soup’, seperti yang diceritakan oleh jurnalis yang meliput kisah ini adalah sebagai berikut:
Janin yang berumur beberapa bulan, ditambah Pachan, Tongseng, Tongkui, Keichi, Jahe, daging ayam dan Baikut, di tim selama 8 jam, setelah itu dimasak selayaknya memasak sup.

Beberapa hari kemudian seorang sumber menghubungi penulis untuk memberitahukan bahwa di Thaisan ada restoran yang sudah mempunyai stok untuk ‘Healthy Soup’.

Bersama sang pengusaha, penulis dan fotografer pergi ke restoran di Thaisan untuk bertemu dengan juru masak restoran tersebut yang tanpa membuang waktu langsung mengajak rombongan untuk tour ke dapur.

Di atas papan potong tampak janin tak bernyawa itu tidak lebih besar dari seekor kucing.
Sang juru masak menjelaskan bahwa janin tersebut baru berusia 5 bulan, tidak dijelaskan berapa harga belinya, yang pasti itu tergantung besar-kecil, hidup-mati janin tersebut dan sebagainya (Masya Allah!!!).

Kali ini, harga per porsi ‘Healthy Soup’ 3,500 RMB karena stok sedang sulit untuk didapat. Sambil mempersiapkan pesanan kami, dengan terbuka juru masak tersebut menerangkan bahwa janin yang keguguran atau digugurkan, biasanya mati, dapat dibeli hanya dengan beberapa ratus RMB saja, sedang kalau dekat tanggal kelahiran dan masih hidup, bisa semahal 2.000 RMB.

Urusan bayi itu diserahkan ke restoran dalam keadaan hidup atau mati, tidak ada yg mengetahui.

Setelah selesai, ‘Healthy Soup’ disajikan panas di atas meja, penulis dan fotografer tidak bernyali untuk ikut mencicipi, setelah
kunjungan di dapur, sudah kehilangan semua selera makan, maka cepat-cepat meninggalkan mereka dengan alasan tidak enak badan.
Menurut beberapa sumber, janin yang dikonsumsi semua adalah janin bayi perempuan. Apakah ini merupakan akibat kebijaksanaan pemerintah China untuk mewajibkan satu anak dalam satu keluarga yg berlaku sampai
sekarang, atau hanya karena kegemaran orang akan makanan sehat sudah mencapai kondisi yang sangat terkutuk.

On this day in 4977 B.C., the universe is created, according to German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler, considered a founder of modern science. Kepler is best known for his theories explaining the motion of planets.

Kepler was born on December 27, 1571, in Weil der Stadt, Germany. As a university student, he studied the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus’ theories of planetary ordering. Copernicus (1473-1543) believed that the sun, not the earth, was the center of the solar system, a theory that contradicted the prevailing view of the era that the sun revolved around the earth.

In 1600, Kepler went to Prague to work for Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, the imperial mathematician to Rudolf II, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Kepler’s main project was to investigate the orbit of Mars. When Brahe died the following year, Kepler took over his job and inherited Brahe’s extensive collection of astronomy data, which had been painstakingly observed by the naked eye. Over the next decade, Kepler learned about the work of Italian physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), who had invented a telescope with which he discovered lunar mountains and craters, the largest four satellites of Jupiter and the phases of Venus, among other things. Kepler corresponded with Galileo and eventually obtained a telescope of his own and improved upon the design. In 1609, Kepler published the first two of his three laws of planetary motion, which held that planets move around the sun in ellipses, not circles (as had been widely believed up to that time), and that planets speed up as they approach the sun and slow down as they move away. In 1619, he produced his third law, which used mathematic principles to relate the time a planet takes to orbit the sun to the average distance of the planet from the sun.

Kepler’s research was slow to gain widespread traction during his lifetime, but it later served as a key influence on the English mathematician Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) and his law of gravitational force. Additionally, Kepler did important work in the fields of optics, including demonstrating how the human eye works, and math. He died on November 15, 1630, in Regensberg, Germany. As for Kepler’s calculation about the universe’s birthday, scientists in the 20th century developed the Big Bang theory, which showed that his calculations were off by about 13.7 billion years.

Teman-teman Fbku yang baik…seorang kawan, mas Arief Rahman Susila pd tgl 23.04.2009, pk 2.24 pm menulis di Fbku sbb: “tadi malam…dalam rangka memperingati hari bumi di HBO ada ulasan mengenai mencairnya es di kutub utara yang semakin menjadi di dekade ini..akibat yang ditimbulkan adalah naiknya permukaan air laut. pertanyaan saya pak…sebenarnya apakah ini mutlak kesalahan manusia?”

Dengan perkenan mas Arief Rahman Susila, ijinkan saya menjawab pertanyaan yang sangat bagus ini, di NOTES saja. Supaya, kalau jawaban saya salah, teman lain bisa mengoreksinya. Begini jawaban saya:

1. Mungkin yg pertama saya koreksi bukan di HBO tetapi di National Geographic Channel (NGC), karena saya juga menontonnya mas….hehehe..

2. Ini pertanyaan yg sulit dijawab…ini bukan soal “salah dan benar”. Tetapi ini soal “sunatullah” dan “pelanggaran thd sunatullah”, (kata orang Islam seperti saya mengartikan sbg “hukum Allah”.. atau “hukum alam” kata para penganut positivisme (orang Barat). Saya tidak ingin menyalahkan siapa-siapa, Tetapi mari analisis kita dimulai dari titik berangkat yang sama. Saya mengajak anda memahami “hukum kekekalan energi”. Ini prinsip sangat penting bagi semua orang yg belajar fisika. Dalam hukum itu dijelaskan bhw “energi” (atau “materi” sbg penyimpan energi) jumlahnya di alam adalah tetap, ia tak dapat lagi “ditambah ataupun dikurangi”. Jadi jumlah materi air pun di dunia ini tetap mas…ia hanya berubah bentuk karena ada energi yang keluar masuk di dalam air itu…kalau ada energi yg membongkarnya, ia mencair…kalau tak ada energi panas, ya air itu menjadi es (membeku)…ini khan proses sederhana dan common sense saja khan. Lalu kata hukum kekekalan energi lagi: “energi hanya bisa berpindah tempat atau mengalami transformasi dari satu bentuk (dalam materi) ke bentuk energi (materi lainnya)”. Setiap perubahan bentuk itu pasti ada energi yg ditarik-dan- dilepaskan (prinsip entropi). Dari hukum ini, saya hendak mengatakan, bahwa mestinya “global warming” itu tak perlu terjadi (karena sebenarnya tak ada tambahan energi apapun di planet ini), kalau saja…sekali lagi kalau saja… energi yang tersimpan di “kantung-kantung” penyimpan energi itu tidak dibongkar dan dirilis (ditransformasi jadi bentuknya yang lain) ke atmosfer. Pertanyaannya: lho kok es di kutub mencair sehingga permukaan laut naik dan pulau-pulau kelelep disana-sini? Jawabannya: pasti karena ada energi yg mengenai es itu…pasti ada transformasi energi ke biosfer (ruang tempat kita bernafas) ini dari tempat penyimpanan energi di alam. Bagaimana prosesnya? Siapa yang “bersalah” telah main bongkar-bongkar semaunya? Jawabannya berikut ini.

Sekarang saya ajak anda melihat ke alam sejarah terlebih dahulu. Kata para ahli sejarah, perjalanan bumi tak pernah lepas dari proses evolusi panjang yg ditandai oleh proses “on-off” atau tepatnya “penimbunan atau pengikatan energi” dan “penglepasan energi” yang luar biasa besarnya secara silih berganti. Sekali waktu (karena tangan Tuhan) terjadilah pengikatan energi dalam jumlah luar biasa besarnya dalam bentuk “rantai karbon” di batang-batang tumbuh-tumbuhan (secara biologis pohon diberi tugas oleh Tuhan untuk menangkap energi dari sang Surya, diubah ke dalam bentuk rantai karbon: ada yang bentuknya rantai karbon bernama gula yg kita makan…ada juga yg bentuknya serat-kayu).

Suatu waktu, tampaknya Tuhan (maha mengetahui bahwa manusia butuh kenyamanan hidup), maka Ia menakdirkan semua energi bebas yang ada harus diserap oleh vegetasi (pohon/tumbuhan) melalui fotosintesis agar suhu bumi nyaman dan permukaan laut tak terlalu tinggi. Untuk itu, dalam bahasa Tuhan kira-kira begini “hai tumbuhan tangkaplah energi dan ikatlah dalam rantai karbon (bentuk fisiknya: serat/kayu) yang ada di tubuhmu, karena Aku menyayangi manusia dan hewan lainnya” (ini simplifikasi saja lho, jgn diinterpretasikan macam-macam) . Dengan perintah ini, terjadilah masa dimana keluasan dan intensitas/jumlah pohon di rimba belantara dunia berlipat-lipat kali dari yang ada saat ini. Karena tangan Tuhan juga maka “pengikatan karbon sangat sempurna” sehingga “tak bersisa” lagi karbon berkeliaran di atmosfer/biosfer. Masa itu ditandai oleh tiadanya “lapisan karbon-monoksida yang menghalangi infra-red yg datang dari matahari ke bumi untuk balik ke alam bebas”, jadi infra-red ibaratnya berjalan di jalan bebas hambatan untuk keluar dan masuk bumi dan keluar lagi dari bumi…hasilnya: suhu terpelihara pada tingkatan yang nyaman untuk membina kehidupan. Karenanya, pada saat itu, keluasan kawasan kutub dan gletser (gunung es yg mengakumulasikan air) di kutub pun, sangat maksimum.

Alkisah terjadi pada suatu masa, tatkala manusia belum ada (mungkin baru dinosaurus yg berkeliaran) , dan sebagian besar energi yg ada telah “dijebak dan diikat erat” oleh pepohonan (dalam bentuk “ikatan karbon” atau rantai C yg jumlahnya luar biasa melalui proses alam). Lalu terjadilah akumulasi dan penimbunan karbon yang bertubi-tubi di lapisan bumi. Sebagian masuk ke lapisan dalam perut bumi melalui proses-proses evolusi geologi dan tinggal disana selama jutaan tahun lamanya. Karena stok karbon yang sangat luar biasa besar itu mengalami “tekanan geologis yg luar biasa kuatnya dan jutaan tahun lamanya”, maka berubahlah mereka menjadi fossil yang “melepaskan minyak bumi” (makanya BBM dan batu-bara itu disebut sebagai “fossil fuel”). Pertanyaannya: mengapa fossil-fuel membahayakan dan membuat global warming? Bukankah Tuhan telah membuat fossil fuel ini sebagai mekanisme penahan panas di atmosfer ini?

Bukan fossil fuel yg berbahaya. Namun dampak pelepasan energi dan karbon dari fossil fuel (yg dibakar) itulah yang membahayakan kutub es dan seluruh atmosfer dimana kita bernapas ini. Berjuta tahun lamanya “fossil fuel” yg berisi “ikatan atau rantai karbon” pengikat energi ini “dibuat dan diamankan oleh Tuhan” di perut bumi. Sampai jaman nabi-nabi pun simpanan karbon di bumi itu aman tersimpan sangat rapinya disana, karena di jaman para nabi tak ada manusia seserakah manusia-manusia saat ini. Pun tak banyak jumlah “orang yang pintar” dan serakah seperti saat ini.

Namun, “malapetaka dunia” mulai muncul sejak Eropa mengalami modernisasi dengan hadirnya pemikiran-pemikiran besar (yang membuat loncatan dari masa-masa tradisional ke masa industri modern) di abad 17-18…dan titik kulminasi proses MODERNISASI ala EROPA atau dalam sosiologi disebut MODERNITY…yaitu seperti dikatakan Auguste Comte sebagai masa dimana munculnya “masyarakat berpikiran rasional-logik” dan “mengagungkan kecerdasan otak serta menafikan eksistensi Tuhan”. Masa keemasan positivisme dimulai abad 17 dan terus berlanjut sampai sekarang termasuk pengaruhnya sampai ke Indonesia (hingga detik ini). Pertanyaan: bagaimana hubungan antara MODERNISME/MODERNIS ASI atau MODERNITAS dengan HUKUM KEKEKALAN ENERGI dan GLOBAL WARMING?

Modernisasi/ modernisme atau modernitas ditandai oleh mulai hadirnya innovasi “mesin uap dari James Watt”, yang mulai mengenal betapa manfaat fossil fuel bila dibongkar/dieksploi tasi secara besar-besaran dari perut bumi, dan selanjutnya dibakar untuk menggerakkan mesin uap (mesin uap = cikal bakal mobil, mesin pabrik, pesawat udara dsb). Modernitas lalu diajarkan sebagai isme (faham atau “agama baru”) yang mengatakan bahwa TEKNOLOGI BARAT (dimulai dari penemuan mesin uap, lalu listrik, lalu penemuan mobil, lalu penemuan pesawat, dan innovasi lainnya) adalah pendekatan dari isme tsb, yang akan mengoperasionalisas ikan modernisme untuk menghasilkan LOMPATAN-LOMPATAN KEMAJUAN PERADABAN. Sejak itulah terjadi REVOLUSI INDUSTRI dan REVOLUSI MODERNITAS (termasuk sebagai sesuatu yg menjadi impian bangsa Indonesia juga pd saat ini), yang semuanya itu “digerakkan oleh sumber energi fossil-fuel”….celakanya…ke lak kita paham bahwa ciri MODERNITAS itu HARUS DIBAYAR MAHAL berupa pembakaran fossil fuel yang memanaskan bumi..global warming yang melelehkan kutub…yang memicu berbagai penyakit degeneratif bagi manusia….

Mengapa karbon menjadi “kata kunci” penting?

Akibat dari suhu bumi yang makin panas ya jelaslah bahwa kutub es yang telah dipelihara oleh Tuhan itupun ….meleleh…meleleh. ..mele leh …dalam kecepatan yang tak tertahankan. ..makin lama makin mengerikan.. …dari sinilah cerita “petaka global warming” itu lalu perlu diimbangi pula oleh UPAYA UNTUK MENYIMPAN KEMBALI CADANGAN KARBON ke bumi/alam sebagai UPAYA MENDINGINKAN SUHU ATMOSFER/BIOSFER. Inilah awal berkembangnya “carbon ideology” yang telah dan sedang digagas melalui konsep Sustainable Development (1980an), ideologi hijau di Konferensi Rio de Janeiro (1990an), Clean Development Mechanism (2000an), dan sekarang REDD (2010an) yang muncul, dan makin keras diteriakkan di seantero dunia…disini pula kita mulai paham mengapa teman-teman Green Peace dan aktivis lingkungan lain meneriakkan “stop ekspansi perkebunan kelapa sawit”, karena perkebunan sawit (hampir) selalu merambah kawasan gambut….padahal anda tahu bahwa GAMBUT adalah CADANGAN KARBON ALAM kedua terbesar setelah FOSSIL FUEL…jika gambut pun dibakar atau paling tidak terekspose oleh cahaya matahari dan melepaskan energi yg terikat didalamnya.. .maka itu berarti kita sedang melakukan MASS SUICIDE yang KEDUA setelah fossil fuel…kita sedang membakar diri kita…dan mengijinkan pelelehan es di kutub yang BAKAL (sudah) MENENGGELAMKAN sebagian kawasan daratan di bumi ini berlangsung makin cepat dan mengerikan.. …jadi saya tak hendak menuding ini salah siapa…silakan anda memikirkannya. ..(saya hanya berdoa… Ya Allah ampunilah kami yang lalai dan tamak ini…kiranya tiada ampunan kecuali darimu ya Allah…).

Genetically Modified Foods

One major application of genetic engineering techniques is in the realm of food production. With the world population expanding and synthetic pesticides decreasing in effectiveness, novel solutions are increasingly in demand. Genetically modified foods are one such solution. Genetically modified foods can: increase plants’ resistance to pesticides and herbicides, thereby decreasing the need for these pollutant chemicals; allow plants to manufacture their own pesticides to ward off insects; increase the yields of many staple crops and thereby ward off starvation in many areas of the world; and allow plants to grow under adverse weather conditions or in poor soil, thereby increasing the amount of arable land on the planet.

However, despite these undeniable benefits, critics argue that genetically engineered crops might transmit their novel genes to wild populations, possibly creating organisms against which humans have no defense. Critics also argue that genetic diversity of plant populations could decrease, thus making crops more susceptible to decimation by as-yet-unknown pathogens. A third argument centers on food consumption, and states that people with food allergies or dietary restrictions might inadvertently eat foods that contain a dangerous compound due to modification.
Gene Therapy

Another application of genetic engineering techniques is in the area of gene therapy, or treatment of genetic diseases through genetic modifications. Proponents argue that gene therapy is the most reasonable and cost-effective way to treat most genetic diseases, because the ideal treatment would only need to be administered once - after that, the modification would be incorporated into the person’s genome. Gene therapy techniques promise to end or at least curb a vast amount of human suffering due to painful, debilitating, and sometimes fatal genetic diseases.

Opponents of gene therapy cite the unknown and unpredictable results of inserting genes at random into the genes in a person’s cells. They argue that playing with the genome could cause, or at least be a contributing factor, to many types of cancer; they state that curing a person of a genetic disease only to give him terminal cancer is unthinkably inhumane. They also maintain that gene therapy on humans, especially at this stage when we know so little about gene regulation, would amount to unethical experimentation on human subjects.
Germ-Line Therapy

An even more controversial subset of gene therapy is germ-line therapy, or the removal or replacement of faulty genes, not in a person’s body cells, but in his gametes. This technique, if applied to everyone born with a certain disease, would eliminate that disease from the population (except for those with spontaneous mutations, which could be treated with ordinary gene therapy). Proponents argue that germ-line therapy would be a great boon to mankind because it would eliminate destructive and costly genetic diseases. They often state that it would be inhuman to allow children to be born with fatal genetic diseases when the capability exists to remove those genes from the population once and for all. They generally see it as an extremely effective way to curb human suffering, as well as a practical measure against the high costs of conventional treatment for generations of people afflicted with a given disease.

Opponents of germ-line gene therapy generally argue that it would be extremely inadvisable at this time, when so little is known about gene regulation or the mechanisms of embryological development; they claim that the premature use of such techniques could have results even worse than the diseases they were trying to cure. Opponents also express concern that not only diseases will be culled from the population, but also relatively insignificant problems like myopia, racial variations like skin color, and even normal variations like height; they generally argue that germ-line therapy is a slippery slope that will plunge humanity into eugenic policies and practices. In addition, opponents claim that reduction of genetic diversity in the human gene pool could increase our collective susceptibility to newly emerging diseases. Some people also cite religious or ethical objections to this particular method of “playing God”.
Cloning

Cloning a human or other mammal is a relatively simple process; the following is a summary of the process used to clone Dolly the sheep. Researchers grow some cells from the organism to be cloned, and remove the nucleus from an unfertilized egg cell. They then take one of the cultured cells and implant it in its entirety into the coating around the egg. Then electroshock the egg to cause the two cells to fuse, and implant the new embryo into a surrogate mother. When the baby is born, two genetically identical individuals of different ages and with different birth parents will exist - in short, the original animal will have been cloned.

The ethical status of cloning humans has been a hotly debated issue, touched off by the controversy over Dolly, the first cloned mammal. Proponents of cloning argue that it is no more unnatural than binary fission, the process by which bacteria reproduce to produce identical copies of themselves; they go on to state that cloning is no more unethical than growing a plant from a cutting or giving birth to identical twins, both of which involve two separate and distinct organisms with identical genomes. Since identical twins have the exact same genome, but still grow up with different personalities, clones raised in entirely different time periods and social contexts will be entirely individual despite identical genes. In this view, cloning is just another scientific topic and will become just another reproductive option, and those who wish to research cloning or to be cloned should not be stopped.

There is a small group of people who oppose cloning - or at least propose a moratorium on it for the time being - for practical, not moral or ethical, reasons. These people argue that cloning is ethically acceptable, but practically unsound because of the resultant decrease in the genetic diversity of the human gene pool. They also advise more extensive experiments on the effects of cloning on animals before human beings are cloned.

Finally, a large majority of people argue that cloning humans is both unnatural and unethical. They cite fears that include: people’s individuality being impaired or ruined due to cloning technologies; aggressor nations creating armies of cloned soldiers to assault other nations; overpopulation due to sudden ease of reproduction; depletion of the human gene pool; and a number of concerns about the moral status of clones. Some go so far as to postulate a stratified society divided into the cloned and the uncloned, and fears about eugenics or of reserving cloning technology to the “genetically desirable” generally surface. Many religions also object to cloning, again by claiming that it is “playing God”.

Los océanos son cementerios de los mayores barcos que se hayan fabricado. A mediados del siglo XVI, el buque de guerra inglés Mary Rose fue hundido por los franceses. Finalmente, más de 400 anos después de que se fuera a pique, su enorme casco de 580 toneladas fue extraído de su tumba acuática. En el mar Báltico, el Vasa, un barco de guerra del siglo XVII, estaba considerado el mayor buque construido en esa época, pero zozobró en su primer viaje. Después que intentos anteriores de salvamento fracasaron, nuestro equipo pasó más de un ano afrontando peligros para sacarlo a la superficie. Fawcett escribió a su esposa desde Dead Horse Camp el 29 de mayo. En este episodio, seguimos el rastro de varios íconos de la cultura popular: el primer encendedor Zippo; el primer número de la revista Mad; y los blue jeans de Levi Strauss, creados alrededor de 1890.

7-7:30pm — Hands On History - Manos a la Obra. Caravanas Airstream.
Las caravanas Airstream han sido un vehículo clásico desde que Wally Byam las inventó, en 1931. Byam usó la ingeniería de aviación para crear una caravana aerodinámica tan popular que pronto estuvo dirigiendo caravanas de cientos de Airstreams por todo el país. El presentador Ron Hazelton visita la fábrica de Airstream en Jackson Center, Ohio, y participa en la fabricación del Airstream de hoy, un diseno retro con un interior actualizado. Cuando su Airstream está terminado, Ron acampa en la casa rodante más célebre del mundo.

7:30-8pm — Coraje y Tecnologia - Tuercas y Tornillos. El Vidrio.
Suena a ciencia-ficción, pero hoy se fabrica vidrio a prueba de bala por un solo lado. Tim Beggy muestra un cristal tan resistente que puede detener una bala por un lado, pero a la vez tan avanzado que se puede disparar a través de él por el lado opuesto, sin reducir la protección. Luego, a Tim se le ocurre una idea brillante: averiguar cómo se hace un bombillo. Al mismo tiempo, se familiariza con una máquina que merece tanto crédito como Edison por llevar la luz a las masas.

8-9pm — Especial de The History Channel - El Código de la Biblia: La Predicción del Armagedón.

Y escuchamos la opinión de críticos que presentan poderosos argumentos de que el Código es simplemente una anomalía estadística. Descubrimos cómo organizaciones militares y de inteligencia interactúan con el Código, y lo comparamos con otras fuentes de profecías bíblicas.

7-8pm — Decoding The Past - Decodificar al Pasado. El Anticristo, Parte 1.
?Cómo reconocería a la persona más malvada de la Tierra? Según numerosos textos históricos, debe buscar una figura pública brillante y enigmática, que transforma al mundo para bien, pero sólo por un tiempo. En esencia, la última persona que usted senalaría como el emisario humano de Satanás. Aunque muchos creen que el Anticristo ya ha venido y se ha ido, otros tantos piensan que pronto llegará, si es que ya no está entre nosotros. Venga con nosotros a observar un mal tan oscuro que sólo responde a Satanás. Seguimos la aparición del Anticristo en textos prejudaicos, luego en el Libro de Daniel y la Revelación, y después en escritos cristianos de la Edad Media, así como en otras tradiciones religiosas. Con la ayuda de entrevistados, tanto religiosos como seculares, examinaremos el enigma del mal desde cualquier ángulo imaginable.

8-10pm — Especial de The History Channel - La Plaga.
Comenzó como el catarro común. Después siguieron la fiebre, inflamaciones del tamano de pelotas de béisbol en el cuello, y tos con sangre. Pocos vivieron más de dos días. El ano: 1347. Fue el peor desastre biológico de la historia y casi la mitad de la población de Europa pereció en un lapso de tres anos. La aterradora historia de Clarence Brandley, un hombre inocente que fue declarado culpable de asesinato y pasó siete anos en el pabellón de la muerte antes de que lo pusieran en libertad.
